Presidents' Day: Leadership
Learning lessons of leadership from the Constitution and Bill of Rights
The ceremony we provide for your Presidents’ Day celebration is designed to help us remember key lessons about the founding of our country and the creation and purpose of our Constitution. With quotes from Presidents and other leaders, participants consider who has the ultimate responsibility for our country’s future. Modeled on the larger Freedom's Feast on-line ceremony for Thanksgiving, the Leader (or host) begins the ceremony and participants take turns reading .
Please take a few minutes before your family meal or preferred Presidents’ Day celebration to read it out loud with your group. When we stop to recall what is important about a national holiday we show our children what matters to us and why. We can create lasting memories with brief ceremonies and shared family stories.
When we discuss how the Constitution, our government structure , or the Bill of Rights may have affected our family’s American stories we pass on important messages to the next generation about ourselves and our country. These conversations can make us a bridge from our country’s past to our future. The actions they inspire are part of our nation’s story.
Try our exercise "We the People: A Freedom’s Feast guide to raising politically engaged citizens" to learn about children who acted to protect their Constitutional rights and find more resources to help teach our children to be politically active. Also take a look at "Presidents": a visual and historical review of our 44 Presidents, a link to the site run by the White House.
Enjoy a meaningful and memorable Presidents’ Day. Please visit us again for Memorial Day!
