Memorial Day: Sacrifice
Honoring the meaning of sacrifice to protect us
The ceremony we offer for your Memorial Day observance is designed to help us reflect on the meaning of Memorial Day and to honor the memory of those who died in military service to our country. When we recall those who died for our freedoms, we help to give meaning to their sacrifice. Our Freedom’s Feast: Memorial Day Ceremony is modeled on the larger Freedom's Feast on-line ceremony for Thanksgiving.
Please take a few minutes to share this brief ceremony with your preferred group on Memorial Day. If you don’t print it out, participants can access it from handheld devices using the link below. Gather at a local military cemetery around the grave of a loved one or unknown soldier. Do it before or after the 3:00 pm National Moment of Remembrance. Or use it to begin or end your Memorial Day meal. Whatever your choice, please take turns and read it out loud with your group.
When we stop to remember what is important about a national holiday we show our children what matters to us and why. We can create lasting memories with brief ceremonies and shared family stories.
Try our Taking Action for Those Who Act for Us to find ways to support those currently in the armed services throughout the world and to collect the stories and honor the service of living veterans. Learn more about the armed services by taking the Military Trivia Quiz.
Thanks to our partner CMOM: The Children’s Museum of Manhattan for their year-round collaboration on Raising Citizens.
A special note of appreciation to Beverly Wolfer Nerenberg, Executive Director of the Major Stuart Adam Wolfer Institute, an organization she & her family established in memory of Stuart, KIA 4/6/08. Beverly served as consultant and collaborator on all elements of our Raising Citizens Memorial Day observances.
Enjoy a meaningful and memorable Memorial Day. Please visit us again for Independence Day!
